Destejidas / Unwoven

Destejidas (Unweaved) is the title of this series, the initial inspiration for which is the story of Penelope, wife of Odysseus, who despite faithfully waiting for the return of her husband was urged to remarry, thus treated by her suitors as women were treated, as property changing from one owner to another. Penelope, however, conceived a plan to deceive them, promising that when she finished weaving a funerary shroud for Odysseus' father, she would marry one of the new suitors. Penelope wove during the day, and undid her work at night to give Odysseus more time to return.

With this image I begin a series of paintings through which I want to tell the story of historical, mythical, forgotten and contemporary women, unweaving commonplace conceptions and weaving a new tapestry from their history, personality and achievements.
